I've come to understand that I like the idea of the holiday season more than the season itself. Thanksgiving is a cornucopia of rich food, too much alcohol, and sugar - followed by a month of the same. Right around mid-December, my body feels run down and I need a reset.
Bring on the soup! I lean towards soups that are spicy and loaded with cleansing ingredients, like garlic. Most of these are fairly easy to make but even the more complicated recipes are worth it because they yield enough to freeze half.
Kimchi Stew. Whenever I felt a cold coming on back in New York, I'd go to Keisy for a deep tissue massage followed by a chaser of kimchi stew at Cho Dang Gol. From there, I'd go home, pass out, and wake up feeling worlds better. Kimchi is magical.
Garlic Soup. Is there ever too much garlic in a recipe? Calling for an entire head is pushing it but I am happy to comply. Add in lots of fresh black pepper if you want more of a kick.
Sauerkraut Soup. I was not a fan of the 'kraut until more recently and have thankfully seen the error of my ways. This soup is hearty and healthy - you can skip the meat if you want - and will warm you to your core.
Miso Soup. Though sometimes, simple is best. Miso soup is deceptively easy but is one of the most comforting meals to be had. Swap out kale for mustard greens if you can to add in a little zing.
