Dark Days

As we head into darker days, things can seem bleak if we're already struggling with sadness or depression. When I lived in the northeastern United States, winter months would hit me hard and the lack of sunshine left me feeling sluggish. And while food can't cure everything - though wouldn't that be fabulous? - we can choose certain foods that help boost serotonin levels, which then help us maintain more even moods.

Eggs are pretty much self-contained wonderfoods. High in protein, iron, and disease-fighting nutrients, eggs are easy and don't take up much emotional bandwith to cook.

And what better to go with eggs than cheese? Toss a little grated cheese in there to boost serotonin even more.

For the vegans among us, tofu and nuts also help even out serotonin levels and can help give a boost when we're not feeling the best. Keep almonds handy - they're an easy and healthy snack that will fill you up and provide that satisfying crunch.

Vitamin C is another way to give yourself a much needed boost on dark days. Citrus is an immediate mood-brightener and is more versatile then we tend to think. Beyond raw fruit (which is amazing enough!), think marinades. Seared scallops with orange, for example, is a quick, easy, and very healthy way to include vitamin C in a dinner. And, you can actually swap out the scallops for shrimp or any firm white seafood.

Even if you're having a day where you just can't, try to give yourself the space to make a simple dinner of eggs, dark greens, and a bit of cheese. That nutrient-dense combo will have you feeling better the next day, and sometimes, that's all we can ask for. It's enough.
